Hulu’s dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale followed the life of June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) before and after Gilead’s patriarchal society gained power. On her journey, she met Janine Lindo (Madeline Brewer) and after spotting a chilling clue, fans are convinced she may have predicted the major death in season four.

Taking to Reddit to share the theory the viewer wrote: “I’m currently rewatching the entire show just made it to season 4, episode 3 The Crossing and I noticed something that was kind of interesting.

“When the handmaids are en route to the Magdalene Colonies just before they hit the train tracks, Janine starts humming the song ‘I’ve been working on the railroad’, kind of under her breath and also while glancing furtively at the other girls,” the user explained.

The fan concluded: “I wondered if the entire escape was maybe coordinated somehow? She was signalling to the girls that they had a window of opportunity, especially when the driver said he needed to step out.

Janine, June, Alma (Nina Kiri), Brianna (Bahia Watson) and other fugitive handmaids had successfully escaped and made it to a safe house which was Mrs Keyes’ (McKenna Grace) residence.

However, after a few days they found June had been caught and was facing interrogation.

There she was met by Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) who informed her the handmaids were still in hiding.

This all changed when she was forced to give up their location after they threatened the life of her daughter Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake).

With this, the women were rounded up into a van and alongside evil disciplinarian Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) they were on their way back to Gilead.

As the vehicle approached train gates, the driver stepped out to pee and June saw an opportunity and helped the women escape.

While they were getting ready to run for their lives and beat the train across the tracks, June held Lydia down with her cattle rod, threatening to zap her.

However she changed her mind and made a run for it instead, the driver started firing shots at the women while they attempted to outrun the train.

Unfortunately, some were struck and died before the crossing but in the emotional scene, both Alma and Brianna were hit by the train.

Despite leaving the van with a handful of women, June and Janine were the only Handmaid’s to make it across the barrier.

The women who had been taken against their will and forced to work in Gilead were consistently finding a way to escape.

So the theory could be true as June was also seeking opportunities to gain freedom in Canada.

Unfortunately, for Janine it wasn’t meant to be, as an air raid bombing separated her from June.

As June made it safely to Canada and became a free woman, it was later discovered Janine was returned to Gilead.

Viewers were beyond gutted to see her and Mrs Keyes at the Red Center and undergoing training to become a Handmaid.

Ahead of the season five release, some fans believe Janine will become a Martha as she begged not to become a Handmaid again and by helping Aunt Lydia out, she could afford her the opportunity.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 is available to stream on Hulu in the USA and airs Sundays on Channel 4 in the UK.
