The Rig is a new horror series set entirely on an oil rig in the North Sea. Filmed completely in Scotland, the six-part series promises to be a classic story of workers trapped in a location, slowly turning on one another. Express.co.uk has all the information about the new Amazon Prime series.

What is the release date of The Rig?

The Rig has only just been announced by Amazon Prime, with much of the series still shrouded in mystery.

The exact release date has not been confirmed, though it will release in 2022.

The series will receive a simultaneous global release, similar to other Amazon Prime film and series debuts.

It has not been confirmed if the complete season will release at once, or if it will have a staggered release similar to shows such as The Boys.

There will six episodes in total for the show, but it has not been confirmed if it is a self-contained story or if it is intended to continue past season one.

As it has been billed as a mini-series, it is more likely this will be a self-contained story, wrapping up at episode six.

The Rig is currently still filming, meaning an early 2022 release date is unlikely, but it is hard to estimate when it will premiere next year.

Express.co.uk will update this story when an official release date has been confirmed.

Who is in the cast of The Rig?

Leading the series is Martin Compston as Communications Officer Fulmer Hamilton, whose job will no doubt become obsolete when the fog arrives at the rig.

Fans will recognise Compston from Traces, Vigil and Line of Duty where he plays Steve Arnott.

Compston shared the first image of himself as Fulmer on Instagram, tagging the post: “First look at FULMER in ‘The Rig’ coming to @primevideouk.”

One fan replied: “Please tell us you’re not going to die in the first few minutes Martin.”

Another added: “Glad I’ve renewed my Prime subscription. Let’s hope you last longer in this than a certain other TV Show!”

Joining him is Game of Throne’s Iain Glen, best known for his role as Jorah Mormont in the fantasy series.

Here he will be playing Offshore Installation Manager Magnus MacMillan, the man in charge of the crew.

Rounding out the main cast is Line of Duty’s Mark Bonnar and Schitt’s Creek’s Emily Hampshire.

Joining them will be Calvin Demba, Cameron Fulton, and Emun Elliot, who has appeared in films such as Prometheus, Filth, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Is there a trailer for The Rig?

No, Amazon Prime has not yet released a trailer for the new season.

With filming still underway, it could be some time before the first trailer drops, meaning viewers should expect it to come in late-2021 at the earliest.

The series is being filmed exclusively in Scotland, the first Amazon Prime series to do so.

The bulk of the filming is taking place on a Scottish oil rig, alongside FirstStage Studios, established in Leith.

What is the plot of The Rig?

Set entirely within the oil rig Kinloch Bravo off the coast of Scotland, the crew are looking forward to the end of a long stint at sea.

Yet just before they are due to return to the mainland, a strange and ominous fog envelops the rig, cutting off all communication to the outside world.

Shortly after, the rig is hit by massive tremors, deeply unusual for a region for does not suffer from quakes.

A major incident forces the crew to start questioning who they can really trust and the fog’s unknown origin starts to break down morale.

The series looks to be something of a bridge between films such as The Thing, The Mist, and of course, The Fog.

The Rig will be available to watch on Amazon Prime Video in 2022.
