Before becoming Lord Chancellor of England, More was an English lawyer, social philosopher, author, statesman and Renaissance humanist.

As a Catholic, More opposed the protestant reformation and opposed Henry VIII’s separation from the Catholic Church.

As a result, he acknowledges Henry as supreme head of the Church of England and the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

More refused to take the oath of supremacy, introduced by Henry VIII of England through the Act of Supremacy 1534.

The oath required any person taking public or church office in England to swear allegiance to the monarch as Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

Following his rejection, More was convicted of treason and executed.

Sir Thomas More was the focus of the Elizabethan play and biography of the same name written by Anthony Munday and Henry Chettle and later revised by Thomas Heywood, Thomas Dekker and William Shakespeare.

In 1935, Pope John Paul II canonised More as a martyr and in 2000, Pope John Paul II declared him the patron saint of statesmen and politicians.
