Tiger King’s Joe Exotic to be played by Nicolas Cage in new scripted series

Tiger King took the world by storm when it dropped onto Netflix earlier this year and saw Joe Exotic and his wild animals at the helm of an issue bigger than all of us. But before the documentaries popularity, an article was written by Texas Monthly which delved deep into the self-proclaimed “Tiger King’s” background, and this is what a new fictional series is going to be based on, with the actor set to play the man at the forefront revealed as Nicolas Cage.

The new eight-episode scripted series from CBS Television Studios and Imagine Television will see Cage at the forefront, Variety exclusively learnt.
The story follows Leif Reigstad’s recollection of how Joe Schreibvogel, a.k.a Joe Exotic, the eccentric, exotic zookeeper from Oklahoma who fights to keep his park open and thriving at the risk of losing his own sanity.
From exploring how he became Joe Exotic, to how he lost himself to a character of his own creation will also be explored.
Reigstad wrote back in June 2019 – before the Netflix series became a hit with millions – how “most of Joe’s life—many of his best moments and many of his worst—could be traced back to that zoo”.

“He had for years both worked and lived on the property. But by August 2018, his kingdom had all but turned to dust.”
As for Cage’s participation, while he will be the lead actor, he will also Executive Produce the series via Saturn Films.
This role marks the first regular television role for Cage have won many prestigious awards for his wok in films.
The actor’s recent projects have largely included a string of crime thrillers and action features, but while continuing to work in a variety of Hollywood projects.
After the news was announced about Cage’s new role, fans took to social media to comment.
“Oh god lmao he’s going to get so into character with this one,” one tweet read.
Another added: “Wow… I mean, it’s kinda perfect casting. Not a lot more eccentric or crazy than Nic Cage.”
“Casting perfection,” a fan simply stated.

Some however questioned whether or not there was a need for a fictional series to be created considering the documentary reveals a lot.
“The hype is over. This is unnecessary,” someone said.
Another wrote: “Why. It’s a documentary. We know what happened. Watch it. Rewatch it. HOLLYWOOD GET YOUR OWN CONTENT.”
“Why though??? Was the documentary not enough??” A fan asked.

The original Netflix show is said to have attracted more than 64 million viewers worldwide.
It comes after Louis Theroux gave his opinion on Joe and the Netflix series.
What fans may not realise is Louis interviewed Joe many years before he became famous.
