Toni Braxton Called 1 Moment on 'Braxton Family Values' Too Real and Painful
Grammy-winning R&B singer Toni Braxton released her debut album nearly 30 years ago, establishing herself as a sex symbol and a hitmaker.
After breaking off from a music group with her sisters for a solo career, Braxton turned into a superstar and still performs live shows. She’s been on Broadway and in films, but fans learned to see a different side of her in the reality series, Braxton Family Values.
Though season 7 ignited its own controversy within the family’s ranks, Braxton once shared which part of the show was a bit too much for her.
Toni Braxton didn’t want to do ‘Braxton Family Values’ show
Toni Braxton is known for keeping her personal life as private as possible, even when experiencing issues with her health and finances in the public eye. It’s part of the reason she was so hesitant to sign on for Braxton Family Values.
In her 2014 book, Unbreak My Heart: A Memoir, Braxton explained when sister Tamar brought up the opportunity to do a family docuseries, she was not with it. “I never wanted to do a reality show. Ever. I didn’t have some secret dream to see ‘reality show star’ after my name,” she wrote.
Braxton admitted she finally gave in after her sisters pointed out how much they helped her with her career.
Toni Braxton said season 1 scene was painful
Many viewers assume that reality shows have manufactured drama, and sometimes that’s the case. However, Braxton claimed that what fans see in Braxton Family Values is 99% real. She wrote that some things remain private, but their arguments are not fake.
Braxton dished on how genuine their series is but added sometimes she “wished it was a little less real.” She cited one specific incident in season 1 where the family met up for dinner at a restaurant, and it was the first time her parents had seen each other since her wedding in 2001. Keep in mind the show aired its first episode in 2011.
“Just by the way they greeted each other, I knew it wasn’t going to go well,” she wrote.
“I was right: By the end of the dinner, my father had called my mother a ‘dirty liar’ (which is ironic, since Daddy is the one who cheated with his mistress for ten years . . .) and my mother had accused my father of philandering all around town,” Braxton recalled.
She recollected how her mother waved a butter knife around while yelling at her father, and the scene was totally unscripted. “As far as reality TV goes, I don’t think it can get much more real — or painful,” reflected Braxton.
‘Braxton Family Values’ current status?
Season 7 of Braxton Family Values went on without Tamar Braxton, who cut herself off from WE tv due to conflict. The youngest sibling also expressed disappointment in her family for taping footage about her in her absence. Toni, her mother, and her other sisters continued with the show.
The series aired its latest episode in December 2020, but so far, there have been no announcements for an eighth season.
