AMC series The Walking Dead is confirmed to be ending with season 11, which is expected to premiere in the autumn. But fans will be treated to an extra six episodes from season 10 before then. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know about when the next episode will air.

When will Walking Dead season 10, episode 17 be released?

The Walking Dead’s showrunner Angela Kang confirmed at San Diego Comic Con this year there would be an extra six episodes in season 10.

This makes season 10 the longest with previous outings averaging 16 episodes. Season 10 will, therefore, comprise of a total of 22 instalments.

The release date for season 10, episode 17 has now been confirmed as Sunday, February 28, 2021 and FOX UK will be airing the episode on Monday, March 1 at 9pm. These new instalments will be airing weekly in 2021.

However, some fans were able to watch the new episode early after subscribers to AMC+, the broadcaster’s premium streaming platform, were given early access.

Here is a list of the new episodes in season 10:

  • Episode 17. Home Sweet Home
  • Episode 18. Find Me
  • Episode 19. One More
  • Episode 20. Splinter
  • Episode 21. Diverged
  • Episode 22. Here’s Negan

Terminator 2 and The X-Files star Robert Patrick is confirmed to be making a guest appearance in the episodes, along with actress and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s real-life wife Hilarie Burton Morgan and Okea Eme-Akwari.

AMC has also shared a brief description of the new episodes, which reads: “In these six new episodes, we find our survivors trying to pick themselves up by their bootstraps following the destruction the Whisperers left in their wake.

“The years of struggle weigh upon them as past traumas surface, exposing their more vulnerable sides.

“As they question the state of humanity, the state of their collective community, and the states of their minds, will they find the inner strength to persevere with their lives, friendships, and group intact?”

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted The Walking Dead hugely with the season 11 premiere now pushed back.

Season 11 would traditionally have aired in October as part of AMC’s fall schedule but due to lockdown, the premiere has been pushed back.

In the meantime, fans will have these six new episodes to look forward to next year.

Some fans were worried season 11 had been cancelled due to coronavirus but this isn’t the case.

But filming is taking place on the show right now with more from season 11 to come.

Fans are keen to know if Andrew Lincoln will be reprising his role as Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead series finale.

Kang previously said: “We will not be airing season 11 episodes this year as we normally would in October, but we’re excited to announce an extended season 10 and there will be six extra episodes to follow the finale.”

More recently, the writer told Radio Times: “So, without getting too spoilery, I can tease that these six episodes to come, there will be some hopefully exciting twists in these stories.

“They dive really deeply into some of these characters that we have.

“It’s a kind of focused, almost more anthology-like storytelling in some of them.”

Kang’s words suggest the episodes will be more character-focused, perhaps like Morgan Jones’ (played by Lennie James) origin story in season six’s Here’s Not Here.

Some have been wondering if Ryan Hurst’s villain Beta will be given some more air time in which to explore his backstory.

Others have been wondering why Hurst really left the series as Beta.

She also told Deadline these six instalments would be more “pandemic friendly” and described them as a “continuation” of season 10.

The showrunner went on to explain: “Well, the cast has seemed to really respond to the scripts, and we’ve had a good time writing them.

“They don’t have the typical scope and scale of what would be like a gigantic like finale with like hundreds of extras by the time you get to the end, but I think we get to tell a really, really cool story that I think the fans will really love.”

Kang said viewers would see the dynamics between Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) and whether she will murder the former villain to avenge her dead husband.

She also promised some more focus on fan-favourites Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) with some wondering if the pair will leave for New Mexico.

The star explained fans would have questions answered about certain moments from The Walking Dead.

She added: “Then, you know, the plan is to keep driving forward into season 11, like while everything is pumping for these six right now.

“The writers’ room is hard at work planning the final big arc that will lead to the series end.”

While AMC has yet to share a date, it typically airs its midseason premieres in February, so fans could see these new episodes hitting screens then.

However, there is much uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which means filming will be impacted by health and safety restrictions.

So, the shoot could potentially take longer than it usually does due to this.

In the meantime, fans can watch spin-off series Walking Dead: The World Beyond, which airs weekly. Some fans have started wondering if Rick Grimes is working for CRM.

Some fans are convinced Rick is going to be coming back after apparently spotting a Thanksgiving clue.

There have also been reports star Morgan’s real-life wife will be joining the cast as Negan’s late spouse Lucille as their backstory is explored.

Some fans have been revisiting previous seasons and are curious to know what happened to Daryl’s brother Merle.

Fans were recently treated to a cast table read, which teased what could be happening next.

Fans are also very curious about the fate of Rick Grimes and want to know when he will die in The Walking Dead.
