Who was Rachel Breckle in Emmerdale as Jai Sharma discovers she is dead?
Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) gets the shock of his life in Emmerdale when Dan Spencer (Liam Fox) unexpectedly turns up with his son, Archie and breaks the news that his former employee, Rachel Breckle (Gemma Oaten) is dead.
Viewers will see as Jai struggles to process the news of Rachel’s tragic death while grappling with guilt over the fact he has been an absent father to Archie, despite swearing he would ‘never give up’ on his son when he left Emmerdale.
But who exactly was Rachel Breckle when she was in Emmerdale?
Who was Rachel Breckle in Emmerdale?
Viewers haven’t seen Rachel since 2015 when actress Gemma Oaten left the show.
Rachel Breckle was related to the Spencer family on the show and was the the younger sister of Ali Spencer (Kelli Hollis) and aunt of Amelia and Sean Spencer.
After a series of failed and tumultuous romantic encounters on the show, Rachel had a one night stand with character Jai after she started working as a cleaner at the Sharmas’ sweet factory.
The one-night-stand led to Rachel falling pregnant with Jai’s child and although she originally considered having an abortion, Jai ended up stopping her – despite the fact that he was married to Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) at the time.
Rachel found herself loved up and in a relationship with Sam Dingle (James Hooton) in the years that followed and the pair got engaged in January 2014. However, all was not to end well for the couple as Rachel was forced to flee Emmerdale following a blackmail plot involving Charity.
A year later, in 2015, Rachel made a surprise return to the soap and rekindled her romance with Sam. However, her return sparked a bitter battle for custody of Archie with Jai, the stress of which saw Rachel’s storyline took a dark turn and character became physically violent with Sam, something Gemma revealed she struggled with.
‘I really struggled and I had to dig deeper to understand why Rachel would do this,’ Gemma revealed in a TEDx Talk.
‘How could this good-hearted woman physically hurt the one person she loves more than anything else in the world?’
In her final emotional scene on the soap, Rachel bid goodbye to Emmerdale for good in order to go and get help in Liverpool for her violent behaviour, taking Archie with her – much to Jai’s fury.
With her character leaving in an open-ended way, for a while there was a possibility that Gemma could one day return to the soap and the actress told OK! Online in April 2018: ‘I would absolutely come back… there’s a lot of potential storylines that could be pulled out. I’d definitely go back.’
However, that possibility has almost definitely been ruled out and the door for Rachel to return closed now that it was been confirmed the character is dead.
Emmerdale hasn’t revealed the cause of Rachel’s off-screen death yet, so this will probably prove to be another shocking revelation for Jai later on.
Emmerdale continues on Thursday 19th September at 7pm and 8pm on ITV.
