The Yellowstone Ranch is owned by the Dutton family in the US melodrama series of the same name, which airs on Paramount Network. The series follows the dysfunctional Duttons as they try to protect their beloved asset from a number of enemies. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about the Chief Joseph Ranch, which provides the set for the Yellowstone ranch.

Can you stay at the Chief Joseph Ranch?

The Chief Joseph Ranch is located along the Appaloosa Trail in Darby, Montana, and the ranch has become more popular than ever after it started featuring in Yellowstone.

The site was used by the Salish tribe for centuries, and the Nez Perce would also pass the site on their hunts for bison.

Chief Joseph, leader of one of the bands of Nez Perce, led his people across the ranch in 1877 – and this is how the ranch came to get its new name.

In 1914 the ranch was taken over by William S Ford and Federal Judge Howard Clark Hollister, and it became the Ford and Hollister Ranch.

But it was later sold in 1950 and was renamed the Chief Joseph Ranch in honour of the Nez Perce leader.

Today the ranch is advertised as a ‘guest ranch’, which also provides the “quintessential western backdrop” for Yellowstone. In June 2020 it was announced all filming would take place in Montana, which meant less opportunities for guests.

The website for the ranch says it is now fully booked for reservations in 2020 and 2021, so fans will not be able to stay at the iconic venue for a while.

The site says: “The filming schedule for 2022 is not available at this time. Please continue to visit our website for updates and scheduling information.”

The Chief Joseph Ranch is still a working ranch, but it also acts as a guesthouse for visitors. The ranch has an Instagram page and on November 17, 2020, they shared a photo confirming the end of filming for Yellowstone season four.

The post, which showed a photo of a stunning sunset with the ranch and some horses in the foreground, said: “That’s a wrap on filming Season 4! Who is excited for the premiere in June?”

One fan responded: “Hope to visit there next year,” while another fan said: “Will miss having the actors here in Montana but looking forward to season 4! Then back for filming season 5!!”

Members of the public can stay at the Ben Cook Cabin located on-site, and since filming for Yellowstone started, it has attracted even more attention.

The ranch’s website says guests are even allowed to bring their own horses to the site, providing the complete Yellowstone experience.

The lodge itself was run as a Bed and Breakfast between 2004 and 2012, but it was later changed to a guest ranch with cabin rentals. The actual lodge is used as a family home for the owners.

The two cabins for rental include the Ben Cook Cabin, used by both Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) in the series, and the Fisherman’s cabin, used by Lee Dutton (Dave Annable).

Each cabin can sleep up to eight people, and the cabins are usually open from March to the first week of the New Year. The cabins are closed to the public in January and February.

The owners of the ranch said they had never listed it as a potential filming location, but Paramount had approached them asking to use the site for the series.

Locations at the ranch which are used for filming include the Great Room in the lodge, the kitchen and the yard. The barns, bunkhouse and surrounding fields also feature in the series.

Fans who have already stayed at the site have called it “absolutely stunning”, and “a wonderful place to visit and relax”.

The ranch owners encourage fans to take photos of the site, and many have shared their stunning shots on Reddit. The owners of the site leave the Yellowstone sign up all year round for fans so they can experience the set for themselves from a distance.

Some of the Yellowstone cast spoke to Associated Press about the Bitterroot Valley location, with Beth Dutton actress Kelly Reilly saying: “It’s a beautiful backdrop, I’m really glad that I’m not doing an office jpb.

“There was something about being out there that really was such a joy. We went riding and hiking a lot, whenever we had time off my husband came out with my dog…it was a lot of fun.”

Fans have taken to Twitter to praise the cast and crew for the justice they served the stunning ranch throughout the series.

One said: “@Yellowstone @colehauser As someone that spent a good deal of time on the Chief Joseph Ranch with the original owner, I can not begin to thank you enough for portraying the ranch so beautifully on the best show on TV.”

The stunning Montana scenery is one of the best-loved elements of the series, and it detracts viewers from the melodramatic elements of the show.

Season four will hopefully be airing in the summer of 2021, and the Chief Joseph Ranch is bound to be inundated with more calls about staying in the cabins.

In the meantime, they have enjoyed being able to catch a glimpse of the stars filming for the upcoming season.
