A total of 15,000 National Guard troops — some of whom will be armed — will help provide security in Washington, DC, in the run-up to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, according to a report.
The number of Guard members deployed from other states has been growing amid mounting fears of more violence in the wake of last week’s deadly riot at the US Capitol, Reuters reported.
Acting US Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen issued a stark warning to would-be rioters.
“I want to send a clear message to anyone contemplating violence, threats of violence or other criminal conduct: We will have no tolerance whatsoever for any attempts to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power,” including “attempts to forcefully occupy government buildings,” he said in a video.
“There will be no excuse for violence, vandalism or any other form of lawlessness,” Rosen added.
On Tuesday, the Army said officials are working with the Secret Service to determine which Guard members may need additional background screening.
