2 dead, 16 injured after knife-wielding man attacks schoolgirls in Japan

A knife-wielding man attacked a group of schoolgirls waiting for a bus in Japan Tuesday morning, killing two and injuring 16 before fatally slashing himself, according to local reports.

The suspect launched the attack at a bus stop during the Tuesday morning commute in Kawasaki, near Tokyo, the Kyodo news agency reported.

Sixteen people, most of them Catholic school girls, were injured in the attack, The Associated Press reported. The attacker and two others were believed to be killed.

The suspect stabbed himself in the neck during the attack and was later declared dead, NHK, Japanese public television, reported.

It’s not clear how old the children were. The school runs from elementary to high school.

A witness told local newspaper Mainichi that he saw the man carrying a knife in both of his hands and yelling, “I will kill you!” at the girls before launching his attack.

Authorities recovered two knives at the scene. The attacker’s identity and the motive were not immediately known.
