Wheeling away in triumph, this is champion veg grower Ian Neale with an offering to make his rivals green with envy.

Mr Neale, 75, had the heaviest carrot (9lb 8oz), beetroot (3st) and cabbage (4st 10lb) at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show in North Yorkshire yesterday. 

‘There really is no secret,’ he said.

Speaking of his success he said: ‘It’s just about having the right growing conditions, and you have to put in plenty of time’

‘It’s just about having the right growing conditions, and you have to put in plenty of time.

‘You do need a little bit of money-for compost and fertiliser-but that’s all.’ 

The carrot and beetroot will be fed to horses and cows in his hometown of Newport, South Wales- but the cabbage will be left behind, as it would slow down his return journey.
