Aldi shopper’s bath mat sparks heated debate – all because of a divisive photo

An Aldi shopper has sparked a heated debate over the colour of her newly purchased bath mats.

Much like the fabled dress which went viral after many insisted it was blue, while others thought it was gold, the £5 item (AUS$9.99) is the latest optical illusion to divide the internet.

Aislinn James took to social media to appeal for help after buying what she thought was a "lovely light grey" rug set from the discount supermarket.

But when her husband arrived home, he asked why she had bought purple bath mats – much to her frustration.

In a post on the Facebook group Aldi Mums, she said: “Tonight my husband comes in and says why do I have purple bath mats in my bathroom.

“Checked it out and the damn things are now purple! I swear I purchased a light grey bath mat set.

“So can anyone clarify if I’m completely crazy or if these mats change colour in natural vs artificial light?

“P.S not happy at all with our definitely purple bath mats.”

The post has received a mountain of responses, however it appears the internet is split on what hue the mat is.

"I see grey, no purple in sight," says one comment.

But a fellow Aldi shopper agreed with Aislinn, saying: "Bought the same ones and I swear they were grey and now look purple at home. Must be the lighting in store."

“I saw them in-store and thought they looked purple so I didn’t buy them as I wanted grey, I was disappointed,” says another.

A textile indutry worker suggests that it could in fact be both, because the mat's colour apperance will change according to light.

"Certain colours especially grey or beige change in different lights. It will be back to grey in the daylight," they posted.

"The red becomes more dominant in artificial light making it look purple ( I’ve worked in the textile industry all my life and seen this many times)."

Another person added: "It’s like the optical illusion of where the eyes and our brain ultimately perceive one colour and then we see a different colour moments later maybe?

"Hope you like purple too."

We may never know the truth, because Aldi says there are six versions of the rug available for purchase, including two different shades of grey.

“Our Microfibre 2 Piece Bath Mat Set was available in six different colours. Two of these colours were lilac grey and sliver grey,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.

“If a customer is unhappy their product, we encourage them to return the item to their local Aldi store.”
