Black Labrador rescued after swimming 1km down river to chase ducks
Indy the black labrador loves chasing ducks, but when she swam out of sight while going after a raft of them her panicked owner didn't know what to do.
The excitable pooch swam away from its owner in a Melbourne park on Friday, August 21.
Luckily, Victorian Fire and Rescue crews were on a routine marine exercise in the Maribyrnong River nearby and the distressed dog owner approached them for help.
Firefighting crews, who were already in boats, quickly set off along the river in search of the cheeky pooch.
A passer-by directed them towards the lake at Edgewater Marina where he had spotted the dog.
Despite the kilometre-long swim, firefighters said the dog did not appear to be tired and was in fact still swimming and happily chasing ducks when they found her.
In no hurry to be rescued, firefighters used the fireboats to herd Indy, before grabbing hold of her and lifting her into the boat.
She was safely returned to her grateful owner.
In a post on Facebook, Victorian Fire Service wrote: "This cheeky canine took some of our marine firefighters on a wild duck chase along the Maribrynong River at the weekend.
"Indy decided to take herself for a swim after she spotted some feathered friends, forgetting all about her owner and swimming one kilometre away.
"FRV crews, who were doing fireboat drills at the time, managed to track Indy down and bring her back to land, to the relief of her owner, and the ducks."
