Couple fine after wife walked husband on leash to bypass COVID curfew

Canadian couple are fined $2,400 after wife, 24, walked her husband, 40, on leash to bypass COVID curfew

  • Woman was seen walking her husband on a leash on King Street East in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, on Saturday night
  • When confronted by police, wife claimed she was just walking her dog
  • Quebec government imposed 8pm-5am curfew last week, which bars people from going outside, except to walk dogs near their residences
  • Police fined the couple more than $1,200 each for breaking curfew

The government of Quebec, Canada, has been keeping its residents on a metaphorical short leash when it comes to COVID restrictions, which has prompted a local woman to put her husband on a literal leash so that the pair could go outside during curfew.

But police in Sherbrooke, Quebec, quickly sniffed out the deception and fined the pair more than $1,200 each.

The bizarre incident took place at around 9pm on Saturday, about an hour into the curfew, on King Street East.

Under the restrictions imposed by the provincial administration last week, people are prohibited from leaving their homes between 8pm and 5am, except to walk their dogs in the vicinity of their homes.

Police patrolling the streets spotted a 24-year-old woman walking her 40-year-old husband on a leash on the sidewalk in the direction of Sherbrooke’s downtown.

The wife reportedly told police she was just out ‘walking her dog’ near their home.

‘One of them had the other on a leash, and she said she was taking her dog, pointing to her partner, out on a walk, as allowed under the exceptions provided by Quebec’s premier under its curfew law,’ said Isabelle Sehrdon, a spokesperson for the local police department, as reported by BBC.com.

Sehrdon added that the couple ‘did not cooperate with the police at all,’ said they were glad to be fined and would accumulate more tickets, according to the local paper La Tribune.

During the first weekend under curfew, police across Quebec handed out 750 tickets to people who ventured outside after 8pm.

On Monday, Quebec’s premier François Legault called on residents to abide by social distancing rules, saying ‘I know it’s difficult, but Quebeckers are able to work as a team when necessary.’

Quebec and the rest of Canada have seen a sharp uptick in COVID cases in recent months. The pandemic so far has claimed more than 17,000 lives across the country.
