Dad ‘tosses baby daughter from balcony to her death’ after fight with girlfriend

A man is believed to have thrown his baby daughter from a balcony to her death before setting fire to their home and killing the family dog.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police were called to an apartment building on Jeffreys Street in the early hours of Saturday morning after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance.

In the building's parking lot, officers found a badly injured two-month-old girl and her mother, who was cradling the child and performing CPR.

The baby was rushed to Saint Rose Siena Hospital where she was tragically pronounced dead.

The girl's father, Clarence Martin Jr, fled the scene but was arrested at the airport some time later after crashing his car.

The 32-year-old was taken to hospital and has been charged with open murder, animal cruelty and arson in absentia.

Police believe Martin hurled his own daughter from the family's second-floor apartment balcony after getting in an argument with his girlfriend, the baby's mum.

The nature of the couple's dispute remains unknown at this time.

As the mother ran downstairs and desperately tried to resuscitate the child, Martin set fire to the apartment.

In the process he also killed the family dog, local media report.

At approximately 3:45 a.m the woman called 911 to report that her daughter had been "thrown off a balcony", Metropolitan Police Department homicide Lt. Ray Spencer told media.

When officers arrived on the scene Martin drove away, and was involved in two crashes during his getaway attempt.

The first was a hit-and-run outside the apartment, while the second was a crash on the 215 Beltway near McCarran International Airport.

At this point Martin fled the vehicle on foot and ran inside the airport, where he was arrested.

The investigation is ongoing.
