Elderly cyclists pick up broken glass from the middle of the road in the rain to prevent it from puncturing the tyres of passing vehicles

• A piece of glass fell from the pair’s tricycle and shattered on the ground in China
• Instead of riding off, they got off their bike and cleaned the road with their hands
• Their simple yet touching action has warmed the hearts of many in the country

Two elderly people have warmed the hearts of many in China after picking up broken glass from the middle of the road in the rain to prevent it from puncturing the tyres of passing cars.  

Police said the pair were riding past a busy junction and a piece of glass fell from their tricycle and shattered on the ground. 

In order not to cause problems to other road users, they immediately got off their tricycle and cleaned the road with their hands carefully.

Both of them are said to be rubbish collectors who make a living by finding recyclable items from litter bins and then selling them on for money. 

Their simple yet touching action has been highly praised by police, media as well as web users in China who are moved by the fact that they chose to clean up the sharp debris in the rain instead of riding off. 

The pair were spotted near the Dongshan Flyover in the city of Huainan in eastern China’s Anhui Province.

Footage of the incident was released by the local Wanhuai Police on their official account on Twitter-like Weibo on Monday.

The 15-second video shows the two people squatting down while picking up glass with their hands before putting them into a fabric bag. 

A tricycle piled with recyclable rubbish was parked in the crossroad near them. 

The Chinese Public Security Bureau has complimented the duo on their behaviour.

In a Weibo post today, the Bureau said: ‘One’s character can be observed from how they deal with the most ordinary things. Let’s start from small matters around us and pass on positive energy.’

Web users have also expressed their admiration, calling them ‘kind’, ‘responsible’ and ‘respectable’. 

One user wrote on Weibo: ‘One’s positive energy is not defined by his class or occupation.’

Another viewer said: ‘Although [they are] poor, their spirit world is rich.’

A third commentator noted: ‘Two elderly people with virtue. [They] deserve [my] respect.’
