Elon Musk’s baby name: How to pronounce X Æ A-Xii and what it means – The Sun

ELON MUSK and Canadian singer Grimes shocked the world with their bizarre choice of name for their baby.

SpaceX founder Musk and his partner have had to change the child's name to comply with California law.

What have Elon Musk and Grimes named their child?

Grimes gave birth to a baby boy on May 4, 2020.

Yet, instead of choosing a commonly recognised name for a person, they have called their son X Æ A-Xii.

The pair originally had named their child, X Æ A-12, but have had to alter the name in accordance with Californian state law.

Californian law prohibits the use of Indo-Arabic numerals in names, so the couple swapped the 12 for the number in Roman numerals, X Æ A-Xii.

Grimes' explanation came after a fan asked the songstress, whose real name is Claire Boucher, for clarity on the baby's name on Instagram.

They penned: "Did you change the baby name because of Californian laws? What is the baby's new name?"

Replying to the comment, she shared: "X Æ A-Xii".

The reply then caused another fan to weigh in on the name change and wrote: "Nice! Just removed the numbers to confirm to California law."

"Roman numerals," Grimes added. "Looks better tbh".

The new mother also added that "one dash is allowed" in a name under California law.

The boy is Musk's seventh son.

What does it mean and how do you pronounce it?

X Æ A-Xii is not a "normal" name, but a series of letters and numbers that have specific meaning to the South African tech mogul and his partner Grimes.

The new mother posted on Twitter to explain the origins of the name, with X being the unknown variable often seen in mathematics.

Æ refers to the elven spelling of Ai, which is short for Artificial Intelligence and also means love in Japanese.

Lastly, A-12, which is now A-Xii, is the couple's favourite aircraft – a Lockheed – and a precursor to an SR-17, better known as Blackbird.

Grimes said in her Twitter post: "No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent."

The 32-year-old Canadian also added that the A also refers to Archangel, her favourite song.

Although it could be perceived to be difficult to pronounce, it is quite simple.

X is spoken like normal, while Æ is ash which is pronounced like an "a" in "cat" or "bat".

And A-12 is simply pronounced with a long "A" sound and  "twelve".

So altogether the name could be pronounced as X-ash-A12, but the couple are yet to confirm.

Although one person tweeted “X Ash Archangel?” which was liked by the new father.

What are the names of Elon Musk's other children?

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has now welcomed seven children into this world – strangely all boys – but sadly one died as a baby.

His firstborn, Nevada Alexander Musk, suffered from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) seeing the youth pass away at just ten weeks old.

Musk and his first wife Justine turned to IVF afterwards and the billionaire's spawn grew rapidly.

In 2004, they had twins Griffin and Xavier, before welcoming triplets two years later as Kai, Saxon and Damian were born.

Musk was also married to English actress Talulah Riley twice, but the couple did not have any children.
