FBI Director Christopher Wray identified the two agents killed in Florida child porn raid Tuesday as career sex-crimes investigators, saying they “exemplified heroism.”

Special agents Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger were shot and killed in the city of Sunrise while executing a warrant against a man wanted in a child pornography case, Wray said in a statement.

“Every day, FBI special agents put themselves in harm’s way to keep the American people safe,” Wray said. “Special Agent Alfin and Special Agent Schwartzenberger exemplified heroism today in defense of their country.”

“The FBI will always honor their ultimate sacrifice and will be forever grateful for their bravery,” he said.

Both slain agents had a history of investigating child porn and sexual exploitation cases in South Florida, the Miami Herald said in a report.

Alfin, 36, had been an FBI agent since 2009, and was part of the investigation last year that led to the arrest of former Miami mayoral aide Rene Pedrosa, who was charged with groping a 16-year-old boy, the Herald reported.

Schwartzenberger, 43, had been with the agency since 2005, and was assigned to the FBI’s Innocent Images National Initiative which investigates sexual exploitation of children online, the newspaper said.

Both agents were killed in the Tuesday morning raid at an apartment complex at 10100 Reflections Boulevard West, police said.

Three other agents were shot and wounded in the exchange.
