Flood of prank messages caused NYC’s coronavirus ‘snitch number’ to briefly shut down
A barrage of prank messages forced the city to temporarily shut down its new text service that lets New Yorkers snitch on social-distancing violators, The Post has learned.
City Hall confirmed Tuesday that the 311 text line was shuttered to clear out a backlog of crank complaints on Sunday.
“This issue has been resolved, but it was not a technical issue on 311’s part,” mayoral spokeswoman Olivia Lapeyrolerie said.
Screenshots posted on Twitter show that the tip line was inundated with texts attacking Mayor Bill de Blasio after he posted a video urging New Yorkers to photograph “people who need to get the message” about social distancing and send the pics to the city.
