Green Acres Mall shooting in Valley Stream sees customers running for cover as lockdown is issued following gunshots

A MAN was shot in the leg at a shooting in a New York mall on Monday afternoon.

Shots were fired at the Green Acres Mall on Long Island around 4:30pm, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

The Valley Stream mall immediately entered lockdown after the shooting started in the vicinity of the Famous Footwear shoestore inside of the mall, according to authorities.

The altercation occurred between the gunman and the victim who apparently knew each other, according to authorities.

When police arrived, the victim was hiding behind the store's counter, which he crawled to for cover after he was shot in the leg, according to PIX11.

Police described the victim as "young", but did not provide an age or identity.

Other customers in the shoestore ran to the back of the store once the shots were fired and locked themselves in the backroom as the mall entered immediate lockdown.

The suspect is described as a black male wearing blue jeans.

Investigators said that there are two suspects as of Monday evening who were both seen in dark-colored clothing.

The victim has reportedly been taken to a hospital for his injuries. The victim's status is not known.

The shooting is still under investigation.
