Heartless texts sent between killer and his pals hours after death of clubber
A killer and his pals exchanged heartless texts hours after he beat a clubber to death on a night out with his girlfriend.
Anthony Condron, 29, was punched twice by Paul Byrne at Liverpool’s popular Maya nightclub and died in front of partner Jemma Owens.
Earlier that day they had enjoyed a "lovely" meal at a Wirral restaurant before heading to Liverpool city centre, where they met colleagues for payday drinks.
But the night ended in tragedy when Mr Condron was the victim of an "unprovoked and senseless" attack by 23-year-old Byrne, reports the Liverpool Echo .
Byrne, of Mossley Hill, admitted manslaughter after punching Mr Condron twice in the early hours of Saturday, February 3.
He also admitted causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Condron’s friend, Barry Goffett, who fell and broke his ankle in the 1am incident.
Prosecutors alleged Mr Condron was the victim of a joint attack, also involving Byrne’s friends, Jamie Addison and Joseph Booth.
Addison, 23, of Liverpool city centre, and Booth, 23, of Aigburth, denied both charges, in a 17-day trial.
Jurors acquitted both of manslaughter and Addison of grievous bodily harm, but convicted Booth of GBH.
Addison was cleared of all charges.
CCTV footage showed Byrne punching Mr Condron, before aiming a kick at Mr Goffett as he lay on the floor, having been struck by Booth.
Booth accepted punching Mr Goffett in the face, but argued he acted in self-defence, falsely claiming that Mr Goffett made as if to hit him.
He claimed he also fell over because he was hit from behind in the face, but this was not shown on CCTV and he did not suffer any injuries.
Addison, who did not hit anyone, denied targeting Mr Condron’s work colleague Rob Watts, after telling him: "Get the f*** outside."
After they were ejected, street CCTV cameras showed Byrne reenacting his punch and kick, on the way to another bar.
Once there, Byrne again mimicked punches and kicks, as his friends were shown laughing and "fist-bumping", and Booth hugged him.
John McDermott, QC, prosecuting, said: "The incident which left one man dead or dying and another unable to walk appeared to leave no mark on their consciences."
He said Booth revealed his true feelings in a "triumphant" text, then, the following morning, showed not "any hint of regret that a man had died".
Booth said he regretted laughing in one of the clubs, when they did not realise the serious consequences of the incident, and the messages, when he said he was talking about himself being knocked down and thought it was funny.
However, Judge Clement Goldstone, QC, slammed Booth for his attitude and "triumphalism", which he said was "beyond the pale".
He jailed Booth for 16 months and ordered him to pay £1,000 in compensation to Mr Goffett.
Byrne will be sentenced next month.
