Hostages in bank held at gunpoint in livestream with kidnapper demanding £380k

Hostages are being held at gunpoint inside a bank and the entire ordeal is being livestreamed.

Up to 30 people, consisting of both employees and customers, are believed to have been taken hostage by armed men inside the Gamsakhurdia Street branch of the Bank of Georgia in Zugdidi.

Local media is reporting that there may be multiple gunmen but at least one has been spotted with a machine gun in a chilling livestream posted online.

The hostage takers are demanding a ransom of $500,000 (£380,000) in exchange for the victims' safety, Rustavi 2 reports.

Police and special forces are at the scene but have not yet commented on the unfolding situation.

There are reports that just after one gunman entered the bank, an elderly woman managed to escape.

She later said that he fired a shot in the air and threatened to set off a grenade.

The police have reportedly managed to rescue several more people from inside the building.
