Jill Halfpenny's tartan coat in The Drowning cost £600
‘A dog’s third favourite blanket?’ No, Jill Halfpenny’s tartan coat in The Drowning cost £600 – and it’s sold out at Selfridges
- It was described by one viewer as resembling a ‘dog’s third favourite blanket’
- TV critics and fans of the Channel 5 series appear to be united in condemnation

It was described by one viewer as resembling a ‘dog’s third favourite blanket’, but Jill Halfpenny’s tartan coat in The Drowning is drawing as much interest as the chilling drama.
Both television critics and fans of the Channel 5 series appear to be united in condemnation of the actress’s wardrobe choice – despite her red and black checked coat carrying a hefty £600 price tag.
So it may come as a surprise to the three million viewers of the four-part thriller that the belted coat, created by French designer Claudie Pierlot, sold out last week at Selfridges.

It disappeared from the upmarket store’s website and shelves when every size of the fringed wool-blend coat with its leather-look belt was snapped up. Another choice from the wardrobe of Jill’s character Jodie, a red and blue checked coat priced at £70, has also sold out at Topshop.
The character of Jodie is one of TV’s more unlikely fashion icons, with Ms Halfpenny playing a devastated mother who becomes convinced she has spotted her son nine years after he disappeared without trace.
The programme attracted 2.8 million viewers for its debut episode last Monday, making it the network’s most watched original drama to date.
Its 45-year-old star, who won Strictly Come Dancing in 2004, revealed how her own grief at the death of her long-term boyfriend, who had a heart attack at the gym in 2017, helped her with the role.
‘As I bring up feelings for the role, I think inevitably some of my own are going to come up as well,’ she said. ‘But some aren’t useful for the character and I have had to figure out which are mine and which are Jodie’s.’
