Kim Jong-un waves off bodies of 32 Chinese tourists after North Korea bus crash

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has been filmed holding hands and speaking with survivors from a horror bus crash which killed 32 Chinese tourists .

The tragedy happened on Sunday night, when a bus plunged off a bridge south of capital Pyongyang.

Four North Koreans died, and two other Chinese nationals were injured, prompting Kim to apologise personallu to China.

He saw off a special train carrying the victims back to their homeland, and North Korean state media said he offered "words of consolation" to those who survived.

China is the secretive state’s sole ally, and Kim is reported to have personally made arrangements for the train to transport survivors home.

In a message to Chinese president Xi Jingping, the state-run KCNA news agency reports that Kim said: "We make a deep apology to the Chinese comrades for the pain which cannot be alleviated with any word, consolation and compensation."

It is unusual for bad news to be reported in North Korea, so Kim’s apology to China breaks with convention.

He was joined by the Chinese Ambassador to Pyongyang, and watched the train, which contained the coffins of the victims, depart from the North Korean capital.

The fatal crash came at a time when relations between North Korea and China have improved, with Kim making a surprise visit to Beijing last month.

While he was there he met with Xi, and the pair held discussions about denuclearising the Korean peninsula.
