Knife-wielding dad sobs in court after being barred from seeing son
He went from mad to sad.
The enraged dad who smacked his son then pulled a knife on a straphanger sobbed in court Wednesday when a judge issued an order of protection barring him from his child.
Edgar Rodriguez’s lawyer pleaded against the order in Manhattan Criminal Court, arguing that his client is the 2-year-old’s primary caregiver and is better off with his dad than his stripper mom.
“She used the child to obtain welfare benefits,” said attorney George Vomvolakis at Rodriguez’s arraignment for terrorizing a subway rider who rebuked him for hitting his son.
“She called two weeks ago and wanted the child back because she needed to renew her Section 8 housing,” he added.
Judge Herbert Moses was unswayed and told Rodriguez he had to stay away from the boy.
“Do you understand that?” asked the judge. “Yes, sir,” replied a weeping Rodriguez.
Prosecutor Colleen Marsh said that Rodriguez, 23, allegedly confessed to pulling a knife on the stranger as he yelled, “Suck my d—k!” and “I will change your life!”
“I will kill you!” he allegedly barked, then repeatedly spat on the straphanger, who was standing beside his wife and 5-year-old daughter, court papers allege.
The violent meltdown was captured on cell phone video.
Rodriguez, who turned himself in, is being held on $2,000 bond and faces up to one year in jail. He’s charged with menacing, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a weapon.
