Lottery-winning nan who spent Covid crisis making scrubs gives away £140k prize
A selfless nan dubbed a "local hero" has already given away the vast majority of a £140k prize she won in the People's Postcode Lottery.
Kath Scott, 72, from Derbyshire, won the prize when her NG16 5 postcode was chosen at random, reports DerbyshireLive.
She and her partner of 20 years, Alan, were in disbelief when they found out they had won a grand total of £140,909.
She said: “I cannot believe this, I cannot believe this money.
“I’ve been at this postcode for 53 years – good things come to those who wait.”
Kath certainly did her bit during the pandemic by supporting her local community throughout the various lockdowns.
The retired factory machinist made hundreds of scrubs for NHS workers at local hospitals and care homes.
She added: “It was hard work but it didn’t matter – I knew it was all going to a good cause.”
With her prize money, Kath plans to pay for a defibrillator to be installed at her local Post Office, and has already promised a large portion of the money to her grandkids.
“I’ve just called them on FaceTime and given £100,000 away already,” she said.
National Lottery jackpot winner who scooped millions reveals how he stayed grounded
"We don’t necessarily want much for ourselves and Alan has Parkinson’s so we won’t be going on a big holiday, instead we’ll do what we can to help others.”
Earlier this month, the Daily Star reported how another selfless woman was shocked to scoop a £30,000 prize on the People's Postcode Lottery – despite only starting to play it to raise money for charity after her mum's death.
Janet Langson lost her mother to Alzheimer's back in February and decided to give money to causes fighting the disease.
She was one of two People’s Postcode Lottery winners with the postcode PR7 5JX – with a lucky neighbour scooping £60,000 thanks to playing with two tickets.
Janet plans to treat her family and reunite with her sister in America with the winnings: “My sister lives in America, so when we can go, we would go and see her and then go to Vegas because she doesn’t live far from Las Vegas.”
