Man is stabbed to death as cops are called to FIVE stabbings during night of bloodshed in Croydon

A MAN has been stabbed to death and 10 more have been injured in a horrifying series of stabbings in South London tonight, police said.

Cops were called to five reports of knifings in Croydon between 6.56pm and 9.12pm resulting in two men being arrested.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene while two others have life-threatening injuries

The Met said there was no information to suggest that all the incidents were linked.

The first attack happened at 6.56pm on Chapman Road which left one injured.

Around 20 minutes later, four men attended a local hospital with "stab and slash" wounds, police said.

One of the men is fighting for his life.

At 8.08pm, police were called to the scene of an attack on Wisbeach Road where one man died at the scene after paramedics desperately tried to save him.

Two others at the scene had stab wounds – although only one was taken to hospital.

Less than an hour later, at 8.51pm, two more males presented themselves to a local hospital with stab wounds.

The final attack at 9.12pm left one man injured on Dingwall Road. Police arrested one man on suspicion of GBH and also cuffed the wounded male as well.

Detective Superintendent Nicky Arrowsmith said: "Sadly, tonight we have seen a number of needless and completely abhorrent violent altercations, including one that has tragically resulted in a loss of life.

"Officers will be on patrol throughout the night across the South Area Command Unit, with additional resources from the Violent Crime Taskforce and Territorial Support Group deployed to deter and prevent any further violence.

"A Section 60 Order granting police additional stop and search powers is in place across Croydon, until 8am on Saturday February 6.

"I urge anyone who has information that could help police to assist us as we work to investigate these incidents to speak to us as soon as you can.”

Knife crime is the scourge of London's streets with the city suffering more stabbings per capita than any other UK region.

A shocking ONS report last July showed that around a third (34 per cent) of all UK knife offences were recorded in London.

Altogether, there were 179 offences per 100,000 population in the capital while there was an average of 82 offences per 100,000 population in England and Wales.

London's knife explosion has fuelled the city's highest murder rate in more than a decade with 149 people killed in the capital in 2019 – 90 in stabbing attacks.

Areas in south and east London such as Lambeth, Croydon, Newham and Hackney have become plagued by gangs carrying blades.

In England and Wales, knife crime nationally has risen 49 per cent in just 10 years.
