McDonald’s investigating claims lives being risked by staff ignoring Covid rules

McDonald’s has been accused of putting employees’ lives at risk by failing to follow coronavirus safety rules.

Whistleblowers across the country have claimed social distancing is being ignored in some branches, while their temperatures are not often checked.

The fast food giant has now launched an internal investigation, saying the allegations are “deeply concerning”.

According to Sky News, staff at branches in Kent, Merseyside and Greater Manchester say health and safety rules have been repeatedly broken.

Workers also claim they can not wash their hands every 30 minutes, while social distancing screens are not always used in some of the restaurants.

Melissa Evans, a customer experience leader at a branch in Wandsworth, south west London, told the broadcaster: "They are risking lives by not ensuring that their workers are safe."

The firm promised staff would be able to follow the measures last May, after reopening following the first Covid-19 lockdown.

It said temperature checks would take place every day before they started work.

TV adverts have since said health and safety measures remain in place.

But one worker in Greater Manchester said it seemed as managers are working as if the country is not in a pandemic.

The woman said: “My temperature isn't checked at the start of every shift when it should be, in my store nobody really socially distances.

“People hug and there is no sort of discipline by the managers for these people that are just breaching the rules.”

She said people hug as they think it's funny, but she is scared to go to work as she lives with two clinically vulnerable people.

Another whistleblower in Liverpool claimed she had not been temperature checked at work since last July.

And in Rochester, Kent, a worker said he thought his bosses were very aware no one is following the rules.

He said he worried about his family getting Covid-19 which created a lot of stress.

A McDonald’s spokesman told the Daily Star: “We continue to work hard with our franchisees and third party safety experts to ensure robust safety measures are in place and being followed, to help protect our people and customers.

“We have regularly reviewed and updated these procedures since the start of the pandemic.

“We are deeply concerned to hear this feedback, and while we are confident this relates to a very small number of the 130,000 people we employ across the UK & Ireland, we strongly believe that every one of our employees should feel safe within the workplace.

“We are investigating the issues raised as a matter of urgency, and strongly encourage any of our employees with concerns to raise these using the various channels we have in place.”
