Mega Millions $1billion jackpot won by ONE ticketholder in Michigan – third biggest prize in US history

A MEGA Millions $1 billion jackpot has been snapped up by one lucky ticketholder in Michigan, making it the third biggest lottery prize in US history.

The top prize was bought at a Kroger store in the city of Novi, the Michigan Lottery revealed on Saturday.

The winning numbers for Friday night's Mega Millions draw were 4, 26, 42, 50, 60 and a Mega Ball of 24.

The lucky winner of the life-changing prize has not yet come forward, Michigan Lottery said.

The jackpot had been creeping up since September 15, when a $120 million winning ticket was sold in Wisconsin.

The lottery's next estimated jackpot is $20 million.

Only two lottery prizes in the US have been larger than Friday’s jackpot.

Three tickets for a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot were sold in January 2016, and one winning ticket sold for a $1.537 billion Mega Millions jackpot in October 2018.

The odds of winning a Mega Millions jackpot are incredibly steep at one in 302.5 million.

The game is played in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The winner of Friday's Mega Millions can pick two options to collect the record prize – a one-time cash payment of about $739 million, or an escalating annuity that offers an initial payment, then annual payments for 29 years.

Most winners opt for cash prizes, which are subject to federal taxes, and most states would take a cut as well.

The Michigan Lottery urged the the lucky winner of Friday night's draw to get in touch and set up an appointment to claim their prize.

Until Friday night’s big win, the largest lottery prize ever won by a Michigan player was a $337 million Powerball jackpot.

Donald Lawson, of Lapeer, won the jackpot on August 15, 2012.

The massive win comes days after a lucky winner scooped a Powerball ticket worth $731.1 million – the first largest win in US history.

The winning ticket was sold at Coney Market in Lonaconing, Maryland – with the Allegany County store set to pick up a $100,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the ticket, it was announced on Thursday.

Winning numbers for Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing were 40, 53, 60, 68, 69 and a Powerball of 22.

It comes after a four month period without a Powerball winner, allowing the game's jackpot to grow to its current jackpot – with an even larger Mega Millions jackpot will be up for grabs Friday night.
