Meghan Markle warns people are ‘more fragile than ever’ in blast at trolls

Meghan Markle says people are "more fragile than ever" following the coronavirus pandemic as she took a swipe at online trolls.

After making the move to America when Meghan and Prince Harry stepped back from life as senior royals, the couple have recently moved into an £11.1million pad in Montecito, Santa Barbara.

And speaking from their new home on Monday, the couple joined an online group call with young leaders from the Queen's Commonwealth Trust – of which Harry and Meghan are president and vice president.

In their chat the royal pair discussed how online networks can "propel" trolling and how internet communities can be used for good.

On the call, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex thanked participants for the work they are doing to use digital media as a force for good, with Meghan speaking of the importance of having positive online experiences, particularly during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

She said: "Everyone's mental and emotional wellbeing are perhaps more fragile than ever before, certainly with Covid and our dependability on devices right now in the absence of human interaction.

"People are going online more than ever before to feel community."

The Duchess said a "key piece of the puzzle" is for individuals to not give into the noise of social media and to choose not to share negative social media posts further if they want to make a difference.

Meghan added that that global reach can also propel negativity online.

She said: "When you look at what these platforms are capable of with that reach, and what that propels in terms of trolling…

"You can either train people to be cruel, or you can train people to be kind.

"It really is that simple."

The duke also praised the young people on the call, including YouTuber Vee Kativhu and mental health charity founder Hunter Johnson, for their work online and said they are "standing for equality, for mutual respect, and for fairness".

Harry later said: "It's on all of us collectively to make the world a better place – and we are."
