Meghan Markle’s fans rage at claims she’s ‘cashing in’ on Royals with new book
Meghan Markle is set to publish a children's book inspired by Prince Harry and their son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor's relationship.
The Duchess of Sussex said the book, titled The Bench, is based off of a poem she wrote her husband after their son was born and will be published on June 8.
Suits star Meghan released an image of the front cover alongside the announcement, which sent fans of the Duchess into defence mode as critics began to take issue with the fact she used her Royal title on the cover.
Meghan's name is styled as 'Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex,' which some claim is "hypocritical" of the former actress, who stepped down as a senior member of the Royal Family in January 2020.
One even claimed the book was proof of the "commercialisation" of the monarchy the Queen wanted to avoid, while others alleged she is using her title to "cash in."
A Facebook user said: "Why is she publishing a book and using the Royal title? She does an interview trying to shame The Royal Family, but she’s happy to use her title to cash in. She’s a joke."
Another commented: "This is exactly the kind of commercialisation the Queen wanted to avoid. What a joke."
Referencing Meghan and Harry's claims that they exited Royal life for their privacy, a third user said: "Isn't writing a book, giving public speeches, starting a podcast, and signing with Netflix the complete opposite of wanting a private life. It's almost as though doing all this will… give you attention."
With a fourth stating: "Sure, write a book, but why publish under the Royal title you don't want? Oh yeah, because it won't sell otherwise."
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Oprah interview torn apart by expert for 'inaccuracies'
Despite the immediate backlash around the book, Meghan's legion of fans were quick to jump in and defend the Duchess.
One said: "The trolls on this post. Truly something. I wish the Duchess well and will be happily purchasing it."
Another said: "What is it about Meghan Markle that immediately makes people become the most angry and bitter version of themselves? She's a woman living her life, go live yours!"
While a third added: "Bitterness personified from the naysayers here!!! The Duchess of Sussex ie: Megan, has natural class and intelligence.
"Harry was the one who sought these qualities in a partner ( well done Harry) the world was her oyster….Independent, beautiful and self sufficient. All power to them, no doubt the book will sell."
Prince Harry has realised he's 'frozen out and turned his back on Royal life'
The book, which will be published by Penguin Random House, will be accompanied by images from the award-winning illustrator Christian Robinson.
Meghan said in a statement: "The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father's Day, the month after Archie was born.
"That poem became this story."
"My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the make-up, as much as it does with mine."
