Moment armed police officer shoots suspect, 31, in leg after reports that he was sitting in a car holding a rifle

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a man was shot in the leg by police responding to reports of a male sitting in a car with a gun.

A 31-year-old man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries following the incident in the Ronkswood area of Worcester at 9am on Saturday, West Mercia Police said.

Nobody else was injured during the incident.

The incident was referred to the force’s professional standards department and the IOPC

In the clip, officers can be seen shouting at the man and ordering him to get out of his car, a white BMW.

They tell him to put his hands in the air but he fails to do so.

A police officer then approaches the man and shoots him in the leg from only a few yards away.

The man collapses to the ground as the officer walks out of the frame.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it was investigating the incident in which a single shot was fired.

West Mercia Police said officers were called to the scene after reports ‘of a man in his car with a rifle’.

The incident was referred to the force’s professional standards department and the IOPC.

Assistant Chief Constable Rachel Jones said: ‘This is an extremely unusual incident for our policing area.

‘We understand that the local community and wider area will be shocked by the events in Ronkswood Hill this morning.

‘We do not believe there to be any wider threat to the local community.’

Scrutiny of officers’ body-worn video footage will form part of the investigation, the IOPC added

Ms Jones said it was standard procedure to refer such incidents to professional standards and the IOPC.

An IOPC spokesman: ‘Initial information indicates that approximately 9am on Saturday morning, armed officers responded to reports of a man in the Ronkswood Hill/Newtown Road area of Worcester sat in a car with a firearm.

‘A single shot was discharged by officers resulting in the man receiving a gunshot wound to the leg.

‘The man was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but not life-threatening condition.’

Scrutiny of officers’ body-worn video footage will form part of the investigation, the IOPC added.
