A female mugger sprayed petrol over a woman and her baby’s pram and threatened to set her alight in a horrifying attack in Spain.

The 49-year-old attacker, a Moroccan woman, targeted the young mother in the coastal town of Vall d’Uixo in eastern Spain on Monday.

She put a lighter to the mother’s face and demanded her belongings, police said.

The mother handed over her handbag, but followed the mugger after giving her baby to a friend who happened to be passing.

She managed to hold the woman until police arrived and arrested her.

Police have since seized the petrol-filled spray that the suspect allegedly used during the attack.

Analysts have examined the flammable liquid and confirmed it contained petrol, police sources said.

Local reports said some of the fuel had ended up in the baby’s pram.

Police officers also seized the lighter, as well as several knives which were not used in the mugging.

The unnamed Moroccan woman was remanded in custody on Tuesday after appearing in court in a closed hearing.

She was told she is being probed on suspicion of attempted homicide and robbery.

The suspect was already known to police. A defence lawyer is said to be trying to get her admitted to a mental health institution after a forensic examination.

Police are understood to be investigating whether she could be responsible for an earlier incident the same day in Vall d’Uixo.

Another woman told police someone had tried to spray her with a liquid in a supermarket car park in the city.
