Nigerian priest, 94, is arrested after youths hired him to place a curse on the perpetrators of killings in their town

  • Anazo Ilomuanya was hired by a group of youths from the town of Ozubulu 
  • They asked him to put a curse of the people behind a recent spate of violence
  • But the traditional priest was arrested after locals complained to police 

An elderly priest has been arrested in Nigeria for allegedly laying a curse on the perpetrators behind a recent rise in violence.

A group of young people in Ozubulu hired Anazo Ilomuanya in a bid to stop the crime in their town.

They asked the 94-year-old traditional priest to lay curses on those involved in the killings in the town, according to the BBC.

Police spokesman Haruna Muhammed told the BBC that youths in Ozubulu formed a group called Concerned Indigenous People of Ozubulu.

Seeking an end to the spate of violence, they consulted Ilomuanya.

Police arrested the priest and others involved after locals reported them.

They are due to appear in court but it remains unclear what charges they may face as it is not illegal to lay a curse under Nigerian law.

A feud between rival drug gangs is thought to have led to 13 people being shot dead at St Philip’s Church last year.

The perpetrators reportedly believed their intended target was at the church.
