Part of VicRoads to be ‘privatised’ with new government joint venture

Part of VicRoads’ licence and registration agency will be “privatised” by the Andrews government and run as a collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Treasurer Tim Pallas has announced the move at a press conference on Thursday morning.

He flagged the plan for a government-private sector partnership in State Parliament two years ago, saying he would not dismiss working with the private sector to improve the delivery of road services.

At the time, the Treasurer said the Andrews government was seeking to balance efficiency of service delivery with “value for money” for taxpayers and road users.

The admission sparked a furious response from the Australian Services Union, with Victorian branch secretary Lisa Darmanin saying that selling off, privatising or delivering licensing and registration by service contract would be a disaster for workers and motorists.

More to come.
