Pizzas delivered to Brexit negotiators as talks on last-minute deal overnight

Drawn-out Brexit negotiations were fuelled by a high-calorie pizza delivery overnight.

Officials worked late into the night discussing the new rules for EU fishermen operating in British waters.

Both sides floundered over more than 100 species of fish that swim in the waters surrounding the UK to decide how much they could each catch.

The overnight talks proved hungry work for officials who ordered themselves a takeaway treat to keep going.

A Deliveroo driver was spotted pulling up to the European Commission in Brussels with a backpack full of pizzas.

A total of ten boxes could be seen being pulled out of the food delivery bag and handed to collectors wearing face masks.

Sources in London and Brussels said overnight that a trade agreement was close, with an announcement expected this morning.

Eric Mamer, the chief spokesman for the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, tweeted to say "Brexit work would continue throughout the night".

He added: "Grabbing some sleep is recommended to all Brexit-watchers at this point.

"It will hopefully be an early start tomorrow morning."

Reports say there were four calls that took place between Boris and President von der Leyen yesterday to get the deal over the line.

According to various sources, there have been a number of sticking points during the negotiations ahead of the end of the transition period on December 31.

Fishing rights and the so-called "level playing field" have proved problematic, Sky News reported.

That covers measures to prevent what is seen as unfair competition through the lowering of standards.

Parliament needs to ratify a deal if one is agreed, but it has already broken up for Christmas.

It is expected that MPs would be recalled for a day next week to vote on the bill, and many predict Labour not to oppose it.
