Plane carrying Melania Trump fills with smoke and aborts flight
The plane carrying Melania Trump had to abort a flight shortly after take off due to a "mechanical issue".
About 10 minutes after take off, Secret Service officers were seen heading toward the front of the plane, reports CBS News.
Shortly after, a thin haze of smoke was visible and there was a smell of something burning in the cabin.
Some passengers were reportedly forced to cover their faces with wet towels.
The first lady’s spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham described the passengers as ‘all fine’ shortly after the brief crisis was declared over.
The plane was en route from Joint Base Andrews to Philadelphia when the smoke appeared and it swiftly returned to the air base.
The plane landed back at Joint Base Andrews around 9am.
She was headed to Philadelphia to address a hospital conference on neonatal abstinence syndrome, a condition that strikes infants who experience withdrawal from their mothers’ use of narcotics while pregnant.
Officials say Mrs. Trump’s trip was being re-evaluated, but a Health and Human Services spokesperson tells 6abc Action News she will still be coming to Philadelphia. She is awaiting a new plane and then will take off as planned.
The plane was a C-32, the military version of the Boeing 757-200, and seats 45 people in First Class-style seats. It’s the same aircraft that is routinely used as ‘Air Force Two’ when Vice President Mike Pence travels outside Washington.
