Prince William and Kate escaped London for country home before Tier 4 lockdown

Prince William, Kate Middleton and their kids got away from London to enjoy Christmas at their country home in Norfolk – escaping the capital before the introduction of Tier 4 lockdown measures.

The family of five are planning to spend the festive season at their Anmer Hall home.

The move was already lined up as the Royal family plan to celebrate separately amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this year, HM The Queen and husband Prince Phillip announced they would be spending Christmas without their family as the Covid-19 crisis involved risks for the festive season.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, along with their children Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and two-year-old Prince Louis, had already planned to escape to the country for the Christmas period.

The family may be glad of their forward planning in light of announcements on Saturday that large sections of England, including the UK capital, London, will be plunged into strict Tier 4 lockdown rules from midnight tonight.

A royal source told The Daily Mirror: “William and Kate wanted to get out of London to have a proper break over Christmas.

“They were planning to spend it alone regardless of the new restrictions and that certainly won’t change now.

“Like everyone around the country, they are hoping for a swift end to the pandemic and wishing for happier times on the horizon when we can all get together with our family and friends.”

On Saturday afternoon, December 19, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new Tier 4 measures would be implemented in areas of the UK to help slow the spread of a new strain of coronavirus.

The new measures are lockdown in all but name – with only essential shops allowed to open for trade and the public ordered to work from home unless that is not possible.

While travel in and out of Tier 4 is banned, households are not permitted to mix, and people are not permitted to stay over at other people’s houses.

Kent, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, parts of Surrey, the boroughs of Gosport, Havant, Portsmouth, Rother and Hastings, all 32 London boroughs and the city of London, Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes, Luton, Peterborough, Hertfordshire and parts of Essex have all been assigned Tier 4 rules.

The tough new rules have effectively led to millions being forced to cancel Christmas celebrations for the 2020 season.

The Daily Star has approached William and Kate's representatives for comment.
