Sharks racing through the surf and stunning sunsets among awe-inspiring snaps in Australian Geographic nature photographer of the year 2018

The breathtaking images range from a lonely penguin perched upon an iceberg to exotic squid swarming above a coral reef.

The snasp will be on display at the South Australian Museum from August 25 until November 11.

The National Geographic website said professional, emerging and junior photographers alike had shown impeccable timing, patience, artistry and technique to capture the superb moments in time.

While they all showed amazing scenes from the natural world, some also highlighted mankind’s impact on it.

These included an image of a seahorse clinging to a net which has caught a stray crisp packet.

The overall winner of the contest will be announced on August 23.
