Triple killer Levi Bellfield admits being near scene when Lin and Megan Russell were murdered
TRIPLE killer Levi Bellfield admitted being near the scene when Lin and Megan Russell were murdered.
Bellfield, 53, also confessed to being familiar with the area where the 1996 hammer attacks took place.
The fiend, jailed for killing Milly Dowler, 13, and two women, confessed in a statement which has been passed to the Criminal Cases Review Commission.
He denies murdering Lin, 45, and Megan, six, in Chillenden, Kent.
Michael Stone was convicted of the crimes and is in the same jail as Bellfield — Frankland in Durham — but claims he is innocent.
A source said: “This is a big development and is being looked at closely by the CCRC.
“While he’s denying the crime itself, this could be seen as Bellfield implicating himself.
“It is the first time he can be placed at the scene of the crime and as someone familiar with the area. And it adds to questions over whether Stone is innocent — and Bellfield carried out the killings.”
We revealed last month how Bellfield told pals he was “in trouble” over a car he drove at the time.
A new witness said they saw someone of his description fleeing.
DNA tests on a lace may prove if Stone, jailed in 1998, is innocent.
The CCRC said a review was ongoing.
