Why the Royal Family open presents on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas Day
The Royal Family open their presents on Christmas Eve as a nod to their German heritage.
While most Brits traditionally open their gifts on December 25th, the Queen and her relatives do the main present swapping the day before.
It's something that they have done for generations, as it's how Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert insisted on doing things after they wed in 1841.
Royal expert Robert Jobson told Express.co.uk: "Royals have done it every year since.
"On Christmas Eve when all the clan are together, the Queen’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren put the finishing touches to the 20ft Christmas tree in the White Drawing Room.
"Presents will be opened that day at tea time as the royals still keep to the German practice of opening their gifts on Christmas Eve."
Even how they dish the gifts out is unique to them.
The expert added: "Gifts are laid out in the Red Drawing Room on a white linen-covered trestle table, with cards marking exactly where the piles of gifts should be put."
The Queen usually has a full-house over Christmas with various children, grand and great-grandchildren, plus the odd extra in-law or plus one.
But no one should be expecting to open a box full of jewels, HRH is notoriously frugal, and the family love to exchange cheap, jokey gifts.

Robert added: "The monarch’s gifts are unlikely to be pricey. Touchingly for people who have everything, the royals tend to buy each other jokey things.
"A white leather loo suit was the star item one year."
While we never see the Royals posting their presents to social media publicly thanking their relatives, there have been some reports that give a glimpse in to what they are opening.
One year Prince Harry reportedly gifted the Queen a shower cap that read “Ain’t Life A B**ch?”

And in 2017, we revealed Meghan Markle had the Queen in stitches with her present.
They said: “Meghan bought a little hamster that sings with a little rope for Her Majesty. It was so funny, especially when the corgis tried to take hold of the toy.”
The insider shared that the queen “burst out laughing,” telling Markle, “It can keep my dogs company.”
