A woman has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after a noxious substance was thrown at her face as she stood on the doorstep.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect who fled shortly before officers arrived at the scene in Steine Garden, Brighton, at 4.20pm yesterday.

The victim was attacked as she answered the door of the terraced home to a mystery caller.

Noxious liquid, thought to have been acid, was then thrown directly in her face and on to the front door before the attacker ran away.

Sussex Police said officers are carrying out a number of ‘fast-time enquiries’ to find the suspect.

The identity of the victim is unknown but neighbours living close by say the house is rented by five medical students.

The attack happened on a small residential cul-de-sac opposite Brighton Magistrates Court yesterday evening.

Police crime scene tape was still in place around three homes yesterday as police continued to make door to door enquiries.

Neighbours living close by spoke of their shock over the suspected acid attack saying the victim must have been targeted as she was attacked after opening the door to her assailant.

One resident said the young woman was seeing being taken to an ambulance with a blanket over her head.

One said: ‘She was attacked after answering her door to a caller. Then they have thrown some liquid at her and its gone all down her face and front.

‘It all happened before I got home from work but there was a real commotion with police, concerned bystanders and an ambulance.

‘I don’t know the lady who lives there but by all accounts she is quite badly injured. I just hope she’s going to be okay.’

Another worried resident said: ‘You hear about acid attacks in the street but this sounds like the woman was targeted.

‘Although we are quite close to Brighton centre here, it is a very quiet street and very neighbourly. I can’t imagine why this has happened. It’s shocking, absolutely shocking.’

Detective Sergeant Jennifer Pietersen of Sussex Police said: ‘The victim has suffered multiple serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

‘We are pursuing a number of enquiries to identify and arrest the suspect involved.

‘High visibility patrols are being carried out in the city and house to house enquiries are ongoing. We are urging anyone with information to contact us without delay.’
