Cleansing powders – rather than gels, creams, and various lotions and potions – are becoming a rising trend in the world of skincare.
There are a couple of reasons why.
Their USP is that they’re made without water, allowing for a more eco-friendly, sustainable manufacturing practice, but an added benefit to this format is that you get a lot more bang for your buck.
Think about it – while your usual cleansing liquid might come in a 300ml bottle, quite a bit of the volume is water, not just the skin-boosting ingredients.
A 300g pack of powder, however, is all skincare, no water. You add a little bit of liquid and voila, you’ve got a great wash.
A little goes a long way, too, so you’ll find that a powder option lasts loads longer than your usual cleanser.
Plus, it takes up less space – ideal for travelling. Just get a little reusable pot (an old lip balm tin works a treat) and fill with the powder and you’ll have more than enough for a week away.
Here’s our pick of the best options on the market right now.
Tropic Clear Skies Cleansing Powder
Made with powerful plant actives, this powder by Tropic – which turns into a soft, creamy foam when a drop of water is added – works to tackle acne-aggravating bacteria, excess oils, and dead skin cells, while hyaluronic acid ensures moisture is maintained.
In a 28-day trial, 81% of people saw a reduction in excess sebum after one use, and 34% saw a reduction in the appearance of blocked pores after one use.
Those with oilier complexions should check out the brand’s deep cleansing powder, Clear Slate, too.

Tatcha The Rice Polish: Classic
A hero product among skincare fans, this water-activated exfoliant is made with finely ground Japanese rice bran and papaya enzymes, which work to break down dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin for a brighter, smoother finish.
Silk protein ensures the skin is nourished and conditioned, so the exfoliation isn’t too harsh.
It’s on the pricey side, but I’ve had a pot for months and I’m nowhere near finishing it. Worth the investment.

Let’s be honest, our favourite thing about this is that it feels like you’re smothering your face in a matcha latte. Yum.
Don’t eat it, though – you won’t want to miss out on the benefits for your skin.
The formula delivers a double whammy of matcha and spirulina, along with aloe vera, and honey, leaving your skin feeling super fresh, smooth, and hydrated.
