Tanyel Tries: An at-home lipstick maker that creates any personalised shade
Welcome back to Tanyel Tries, our beauty column in which lifestyle reporter and beauty nerd Tanyel Mustafa tests out the latest products and trends to let you know whether they get our approval – or should be trashed.
Last year, I wrote about how beauty tech was developing – and how products are getting smarter.
For that, I spoke to the mind behind one of the coolest pieces of beauty tech out there: a personalised, at-home lipstick maker.
It’s the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Sur Mesure Powered by Perso – a device that costs £250 and can create as many lipstick shades as you like.
I got to road test it for a few days. Is it worth it?
This week in #TanyelTries we’re road testing @yslbeauty Rogue Sur Mesure Device – an at-home lipstick maker that can create any shade you want! Here’s how we got on with it #perso #rougesurmesure #yslrougesurmesure #lipstickmaker #ysllipstick #beautytech #ysllipstickprinter
So how does it work?
You load the device up with the colour family you want to create from (e.g. reds, oranges, nudes…) and then you download an app. There you select the colour lipstick you want from a colour wheel, or you can take a picture of something and it will create that colour in a lipstick.
Say you want to match your lipstick to your dress, take a picture of the dress and it’ll do as close a match as possible using AI.
It’s very fun to play with, as you can create a new colour in a matter of seconds.
If you’re someone that owns multiple lipsticks and never finishes them, this could be your answer – yes, it’s a more costly device upfront, but one cartridge lasts a long time and there’s far less waste involved.
Over a few days, I was able to create multiple lipstick shades and only used 1% of the cartridge (keep in mind, I created way more colours for the sake of testing than I would if I were using this on a regular day).
For someone that wears one lipstick only, save your money as this’ll be wasted on you – it truly is for the trend-obsessed beauty lover.
The colour cartridges are easy to swap in and out – the device knows automatically and will refresh itself to match the correct colour family.
One oversight with the orange set is you can’t make a tangerine shade, which seemed bizarre to me – so there are some limits as to the colours you can make, but almost anything you could want is there.
If you settle on a colour, the top of the device detaches so you have a compact to travel around with containing your lipstick colour for the day, along with a lip brush.
This can be annoying to clean if you prefer a bullet lipstick (like me), but the compact is chic with the YSL logo on it and a mirror inside – hardly the worst thing to carry around.
One fill of lipstick gives you plenty of goes at topping up, so you don’t need to worry about running out of colour for the day.
And as for the lipstick formula itself, it’s comfortable, not drying, has a slight satin finish, and lasts a reasonable amount of time. It feels high-end.
It is, after all, YSL.
When it was time to return the device, I did so with a heavy heart – it was genuinely a joyful experience to use, with only a few small flaws (such as the cleaning issue).
With Christmas coming up, I imagine this would make a great gift for a lipstick lover – they’ll never run out of options.
Verdict: Tanyel approved.
