Welcome back to Tanyel Tries, our beauty column in which lifestyle reporter and beauty nerd Tanyel Mustafa tests out the latest products and trends to let you know whether they get our approval – or should be trashed.
Sephora is here – yay!
While no doubt exciting, the truth is most brands stocked at Sephora made their way overseas long ago, and there aren’t many that are entirely new to British soil.
ILIA Beauty, however, is an exception, as before now it was harder to get here.
For those not in the know, ILIA Beauty is a ‘cool girl’ makeup brand popular with American beauty YouTubers.
Perfect for those who like a ‘no-makeup-makeup’ look, and in my opinion, a slightly more sophisticated version of Glossier, it’s targetted at an age group just a touch older.
Many of the products are multi-use, making for quick monochromatic makeup.
I used nearly a full-face’s worth of their makeup – and here’s what I thought.
This week on #TanyelTries we’re doing a brand review of ILIA Beauty @officialiliabeauty – a brand that’s new to the UK thanks to the launch of @sephorauk 💄 #iliabeauty #iliaserum #iliamakeup #sephora #iliamultistick
The look I achieved was glowy to the extreme. I must admit, I had to powder down after filming before heading out to meet a friend (and powder layered over it smoothly) as it was too much for me, but those who love glazed doughnut skin will be satisfied.
Here’s a breakdown of what I tried.
Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 30, £46: I wanted to love this, as I like a sheer tint, but it felt sticky and heavy on the skin. It’s super glowy which is great and it evens out skin without covering anything up, but I think there’s better tints on the market at a lower cost.
True Skin Serum Concealer, £29: This was a winner – medium coverage, buildable, light reflecting, and easy to blend. This one is going to stay in my makeup bag.
Multi-Stick, £33: I was so excited to try this as it’s one of the brand’s hero products, but it lacks pigmentation and in order to build it up, you need to layer it heavy which doesn’t feel nice on the skin.
Color Haze Multi-Use Pigment, £31: This is the total opposite, being extremely pigmented. A little goes a long way! Having said that, it was easy to blend out even when I did apply too much. This is worth trying (and if you like Glossier Cloud Paint, it’s a similar vibe – just punchier).
Liquid Powder Chromatic Eye Tint, £27: This is brilliant. It takes seconds to blend out with a finger and dries quick enough that you can use it in a hurry. No creasing over a full day of wear, too.
Balmy Tint Hydrating Lip Balm, £27: This feels lovely and hydrating while actually giving a noticeable tint to lips. This will be a product that lives in my bag for on-the-go.
The Necessary Eyeshadow Palette Cool Nude, £37: It’s a non-fussy eye palette with very simple essential shades. To be honest, there’s nothing special about it but there isn’t anything offensive either. If you’re new to makeup, give it a go, if you’re seasoned, you probably already have something like it.
I’m glad ILIA Beauty is now available in the UK – while some products are a bit meh, there’s plenty to love here.
Verdict: Tanyel approved (mostly).
