Adele’s loves and losses that inspired songs unveiled on birthday

Adele, who is rumoured to be releasing a new album this spring, once joked that without going through heartbreaking times, there would be “no music” and fans would be begging her to get divorced just so that they could hear new material.

However, it isn’t just her high profile romances that have inspired the star to put pen to paper and lyrics to microphone, as the songstress has been experiencing intense love and loss ever since the age of two.

Express.co.uk can reveal her track ‘To Be Loved’, from her last album, 30, was an ode to the painful relationship she had with her absent father Mark Evans, who split from her mum when she was a toddler.

In the spring of 2021, she played her dad the song on his deathbed, shortly before he succumbed to bowel cancer, in a last minute race against the clock to patch up their turbulent relationship.

“My main goal in life is to be loved in love… so I wanted to play it to my dad being like, ‘You’re the reason I haven’t done that yet,'” she explained to Oprah Winfrey after his death.

“He was the reason I haven’t fully accessed what it is to be in a loving relationship with somebody.”

Prior to that, her estranged father – who’d been living miles away from her London home in his native Wales – hadn’t listened to a single Adele song since 2007’s ‘Hometown Glory’, deeming it “too painful”.

“He would switch it off and he never ever played any of my other music,” she lamented to Oprah.

During one heart-breaking Grammy Award acceptance speech, a traumatised-looking Adele blurted out: “I don’t love my dad”, and instead honoured her manager, whom she says she loved “like a dad”.

Meanwhile, Adele found herself having to split up her own family too after her breakup from charity boss Simon Konecki.

The pair are co-parenting their son Angelo, and unlike Adele’s own father when she was growing up, Simon plays an active role in his life – but that didn’t make the tough decision to split her family up any easier for the conflicted singer.

On ‘My Little Love’, another major track from 30, listeners can hear a conversation between her and Angelo directly as she vents the guilt she feels.

“I feel a bit confused. I feel like I don’t really know what I’m doing,” she exclaims, as her son plaintively enquires: “Oh, at all?”

The star, who is now happy in a healthy relationship with sports agent Rich Paul, admits she felt tormented over her choice to get divorced, due to her son’s questions such as: “Why can’t you [and dad] still live together?”

“I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he’s in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness,” she told Vogue after 30’s release.

“It made him really unhappy sometimes, and that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.”

In the past, Adele has amused fans by going onstage with a tampon wrapped around her finger to soak up blood from a broken nail – yet the more emotional wounds in her life have never been hidden, as the songstress pours her deepest pain into her songs.
