Alex Scott opens up about falling in love with teammate Kelly Smith
Alex Scott teases ‘stuff people don’t know’ in her book
Alex Scott, 38, has revealed that she “fell madly in love” with her former England and Arsenal teammate, Kelly Smith, 44. Scott, who generally keeps her personal life private, has spoken candidly about their relationship, and subsequent heartbreak, for the first time.
The extracts can be found in her memoir, How (Not) To Be Strong.
Speaking at the launch, Scott explained that she wanted to reveal that part of her life because it would have been “cheating” to leave it out.
She also described Smith as her “first love” and says their relationship was a “huge part of her life”.
She said, as reported by the Daily Mirror: “I went back and forth on whether I’d actually be writing the chapter. But then it was one of those moments, I’m writing this book and I want to tell everything. I thought I’d be cheating you all if I didn’t put that in there.
“For me, it’s like that first love story, I fell madly and deeply in love. And yes, there’s that heartbreak and those things, but it’s a huge part of my life and I wouldn’t go back and change that.
“Because that feeling of love and that excitement and what it gives you, it needed to be in there.”
Scott first joined the England national team in 2004, with Smith making her debut nine years earlier.
The football stars both signed for Arsenal in 2005 after Scott had been playing for Birmingham City and Smith returned from her stint in the United States.

During their time together, they bought a house in Hertfordshire before moving to America to play for the Boston Breakers in 2009.
The pair returned to the UK in 2012 following the suspension of the women’s league in the US.
They re-signed for Arsenal and represented Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics, where the team finished fifth.
Following their split, Scott and Smith have remained friends.
In 2016, Smith married management consultant DeAnna Dobosz, with whom she has two children.
Smith has previously opened up about her struggles with alcoholism and admitted that she would “drink every day until [she] passed out” after she suffered an injury to her leg in 2004.
She explained to The Independent in 2011 that she eventually sought help and spent a month at the Priory and then had treatment at the Sporting Chance Clinic.
Scott is currently single and recently revealed that she is “ready” to love again after a series of “unhealthy” relationships.
While reflecting on herself and her past romances, Scott told The Times: “I’ve been single for a while now, and I think that’s because I needed to be.
“There were patterns in my relationships that I knew were not healthy.
“I understand myself more now. Before I always had these walls up because I was trying to protect myself and protect people around me
“Now I’m ready to let them all down. I’m ready to be loved.”
