Amber Heard’s sister has slammed MTV for inviting Johnny Depp to their 2022 Video Music Awards in New Jersey last night, his first TV appearance since his ugly defamation trial.

Whitney Heard took to social media to voice her anger, fuming on Instagram late Sunday evening: ‘@MTV you’re disgusting and clearly desperate! I really hope that none of the people that made this call have daughters.’

Whitney, 34, also shared another message on her Instagram Story that said ‘I stand with Amber Heard’ alongside a graphic that renamed the event the ‘DVMAs’ an apparent reference to domestic violence.’

The pre-recorded bit showed Depp, 59, dressed up as the music channel’s iconic Moonman logo in his first major TV appearance since his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp – whose face appeared to be superimposed in the space suit – could be heard in a voice over saying: ‘I just want you guys to know that I’m available for birthdays, Bar Mitzvahs, Bat Mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, any old thing you need.’

Alluding to his drama with his ex-wife Heard, 36, that he claims caused him to lose out on film roles, the embattled actor joked: ‘And you know what? I needed the work.’

Amber’s sister Whitney wasn’t the only one that took issue with the bit, as one person raged on Twitter, ‘MTV is so disgusting for this Johnny Depp s***,’ while another wrote: ‘Man f*** MTV for giving Johnny Depp a platform.’

The MTV Video Music Awards appearance was Johnny’s first major sighting on US television since he was a guest in 2017 on the Jimmy Kimmel Live talk show.

Depp made a few appearances throughout the awards show broadcast from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

‘VMAs let’s get back to the f***ing music, shall we,’ he also said at one point from the spacesuit.

Depp sued his ex-wife Amber in February 2019 over her December 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post and she countersued him in August 2020.

The Depp v. Heard trial was held in Fairfax County, Virginia from April 2022 to June 2022 and its livestream was widely watched and generated heavy traffic on social media.

The bombshell trial included testimony on the witness stand from both Depp and Heard who provided details into their fairytale romance that turned into a disastrous marriage with both accusing each other of abuse.

Images were shown of Depp pouring himself what Heard’s attorney described as a ‘mega pint of red wine’ while smashing up his kitchen, photos of poop on Depp’s bed that he claimed were Heard’s as well as messages from Depp to his friend, British actor Paul Bettany, in which Depp wrote: ‘Let’s Burn Amber.’

In another message Depp wrote: ‘I will f*** her burnt corpse afterward to make sure she is dead.

Heard during her emotional testimony described Depp as a violent and jealous man and said his jealousy toward actor James Franco was the reason he flew into a rage on board a Boston to Los Angeles flight when he allegedly kicked Heard in the back.

The text Depp sent to Bettany saying ‘let’s burn Amber’ was because he suspected she was having an affair with Franco, the jury was told.

The jury found in favor of Depp who was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages from Heard.

The punitive damages were later lowered to $350,000 due to a limit imposed by Virginia state law.

Some users on Twitter loved seeing him again and appreciated his self-deprecating sense of humor.

Others, however, thought MTV made a ‘poor decision’ and one tweet criticized Johnny for engaging in a ‘humiliation ritual to be accepted back into Hollywood.’

Depp will be making his return to acting in the upcoming period piece Jeanne du Barry that began filming last month in France.

Images were shared earlier this month of Depp as his character King Louis XIV in the film directed by French director Maïwenn, 46, who also stars in the movie.

Depp also will direct an upcoming film about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, co-produced by Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.

The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.

I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.

I believe Johnny’s attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of Freedom of Speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the UK.

I’m sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American – to speak freely and openly.
