Busy Philipps and Eldest Child Birdie Enjoy a Red Carpet Night in NYC
Busy Philipps brought a special date to the “Single Drunk Female” season two premiere: her eldest child, Birdie Leigh Silverstein. The actor and her 14-year-old mini-me hit the red carpet together at New York City’s Midnight Theatre on April 11 and looked like two peas in a pod while posing for the cameras. Philipps, a new cast addition for the Freeform series, wore a black maxi dress and white blazer, while Birdie wore an orange satin slip dress and flats and later borrowed their mom’s blazer.
The following morning, Philipps shared a lengthy Instagram caption about her experience starring in “Single Drunk Female” and mentioned how much fun Birdie had at the season two screening. “Last night at the premiere, Birdie flipped out to meet Ally Sheedy,” she wrote, adding that her child also bonded with Sheedy’s mother, Charlotte, during the event. “It was so sweet and I think sometimes when you’re a kid who doesn’t exactly fit in with your peers for a myriad of reasons, having a moment where you realize your value as a person exists beyond the confines of middle school is the greatest gift any adult can offer. The premiere was as sweet and fun as the show itself!!!”
At the end of 2020, Philipps opened up about Birdie’s identity on her podcast, sharing that her firstborn came out as gay at age 10 and uses they/them pronouns. “I said, ‘You know, Bird, I’ve been doing a bad job with the pronouns,'” Philipps recalled at the time. “Because Birdie said that they would like their pronouns to be they/them, and I haven’t been doing it, and I said because I have this public persona and I want Birdie to be in control of their own narrative and not have to answer to anybody outside of our friends and family if they don’t want to.” Phillips later clarified in a Health interview that Birdie identifies as “femme-presenting nonbinary.”
Phillips has attended several red carpet events with Birdie in recent years, including the premiere of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour” album documentary and Gucci’s global gender-equity summit. Phillips also supported Birdie at the premiere of Amazon’s “With Love,” a series in which Birdie plays a recurring nonbinary character. Phillips welcomed Birdie in 2008 with screenwriter Marc Silverstein, from whom she split in 2021 after 15 years of marriage. She and Silverstein also share a second child, 9-year-old daughter Cricket.
