Charles ‘hopes for reconciliation’ with Harry and Meghan before coronation
King Charles hopes for a reconciliation withHarry andMeghan before his coronation in May, it has been reported.
The 74 year old monarch is said to be ‘sad rather than angry’ about how the relationship between The Firm and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has soured since the couplestepped back from senior royal life in 2020.
Tensions between theRoyal Family and Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, have been heightened over the past week with the release of the pair’s Netflix documentary – and are likely to be strained further still by the release of the Duke’s autobiography Spare next month.
The first three episodes of the docuserieslanded on the streaming platform last week – on Thursday 8 December. The second volume is set to air on Thursday (15 December).
Harry has faced a backlash following the trailer for the final three episodes after he appeared to take a swipe at the Royal Family andPrince William–accusing the monarchy of “institutional gaslighting”.
However, according to theDaily Mail, the King is said to still hope and believe a “rapprochement” with his son and daughter-in-law is possible before the coronation on 6 May.
This is said to have created a “growing gulf” between the monarch and some courtiers who believe the Royal Family needs protection from “one of its own”.
A source told the outlet: “The message from the King via his senior team continues to be that he is sad rather than angry and hopes that, in time, the issues can be resolved within the family.
“But that underestimates the mission Harry and Meghan are embarking on, which is about tearing down the institution of the monarchy.
“Many courtiers believe the king needs to allow the Palace to take a more aggressive response over the next month, with both part two of the Netflix series and the release of Spare, or the damage done, especially internationally, could be hard to counteract.”
In the latest bombshell trailer for Harry & Meghan on Netflix, the couple discuss their experiences of life in the Royal Family – with Meghan said she felt like she was being “fed to the wolves”.
In another clip, Harry added: “They were happy to lie to protect my brother. They were never willing to tell the truth to protect us.”
This accusation led royal author Tom Bower to claim that his late mother Princess Diana would have been left "appalled at his disloyalty".
Meanwhile, former BBC royal commentator Jennie Bond claimed the decision to include a clip of Diana's Panorama interview in the Netflix series was“blatantly, openly and pointedly hurtful” to Prince William.
The Prince of Wales, 40, has previously said that the 1995 BBC programmeshould never be shown again after it was revealed how shamed journalist Martin Bashir used deceitful tactics to convince Diana to take part in it.
However, midway through the first episode of the Harry & Meghan documentary, clips are shown of Diana speaking in the controversial interview – which is said to have left William"furious".
Ms Bond also claimed that King Charles will have been left distraught by the show – but will not directly respond unless there is a“direct hit” on 75 year oldCamilla, Queen Consort.
